Job Summary: Health Information Clerk

The Health Information Clerk works collaboratively within the clinical care setting. This role provides support to teams while promoting quality patient care as it relates to health information management (HIM) functions. The Health Information Clerk will handle secure and confidential health information in all electronic and/or other records while ensuring compliance with HIPAA privacy and security requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain medical records in accordance with the law and accepted industry standards.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of HIPAA regulations and any other privacy policies and guidelines to ensure organizational compliance.
  • Assure external medical records received from outside health care providers and are indexed into the electronic medical record.
  • Responsible for oversight of internal referral system.
  • Assist with accurately scanning of medical records into the electronic health record.
  • Responsible for all release of information requests across the network. Retrieve, collect and prioritize all request for medical records made through the organization, patients and affiliates.
  • Assist with creating and presenting employee education as it relates to health information and medical record functions and requirements.
  • Verify legitimacy, accuracy and authority of all such requests and then process and invoice as appropriate
  • Report any inappropriate access, disclosure of protected health information or other incidents of non-compliance to Compliance and Risk.
  • Assist patients, staff and affiliates with medical records requests and questions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associates degree in Health Informatics, computer science, or of a health care related field preferred.
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • One (1) year experience in a health care environment strongly preferred.
  • EPIC experience preferred.
  • Excellent computer, organization, and project management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges, roles and duties.
  • Medical Terminology knowledge preferred.
